Prior to turning to artistic photography, I spent 33 years as a secondary English/ Language Arts teacher in the Beacon City School District, followed by service as an ordained United Methodist minister. In both roles, I used visual imagery to enhance messages and foster connection. My goal has always been to offer platforms where art and photography might build bridges between people.
As a lifelong resident of the Hudson Valley, I now feel called to share my photos locally—to encourage viewers to reflect, converse, and connect through their own interpretive lenses in settings that invite open, meaningful dialogue.
Each photo exhibited was taken “in an instant”—the moment I saw it, before thought intervened. (I am always “shutter ready.” No planned or studio images here!) Only after taking the shot do I allow myself time and space to meditate on what the camera has captured. I am often awed by the result. I believe there is a spiritual or cosmic connection in the entire process. These images feel like priceless gifts, and I am led to share them.
The photos in this exhibit are drawn from my Sand Script, Sky Script, Sea Script, and Spirit Script collections. Each image is intended for visual contemplation, meditation, journaling, and group reflection. I hope viewers will see both within and beyond each photo—and perhaps feel inspired to share their thoughts with others while viewing.
To date, my work has been exhibited at Beacon’s Howland Cultural Center and at a community event in Fishkill, NY. The photos are also central to an online program that I developed and teach nationally called Contemplative Photography.
I intend to continue taking photos as I am mysteriously led, seeking new ways and places to share them—always with the hope that they might help or bring understanding and joy to others.
I’m grateful for the opportunity to exhibit at Grinnell Library. I welcome invitations to share these photos in other venues or presentations. Please feel free to contact me with comments or suggestions at darleneresling@gmail.com.
